The Best Abs, Core, and Pelvic Floor Workout for Moms #90DaysToHealth

The Best Postpartum Abs Workout: A full review of Abs, Core & Pelvic Floor 30-Day Program by Natalie Hudson

Motherhood can make you feel stronger than you’ve ever felt before.

It’s true! Not only have you grown a little human being inside of you, you then gave birth, you’ve raised this little being with your whole heart, body and mind – and it takes strength to do so!

Yet no matter how strong we may feel, sometimes our physical strength just doesn’t match up. At least, that’s how I feel when it comes to my abdomen muscles and pelvic floor.

Do I pee a little if I sneeze?

Sometimes.

Am I racing to the bathroom if I’ve waited too long for a tinkle?

Oh yeah.

Can I jump on a trampoline with my kids without peeing myself?

Nope.

And it sucks when you discuss these somewhat embarrassing details with your doctor, who then tells you to work on your kegels or recommends incontinence pads.

This is why I was super stoked to discover the Abs, Core & Pelvic Floor 30-Day Program, which is made for women 6 weeks postpartum to any age postpartum! The program addresses issues with the loving ‘mommy pooch’, as well as Diastasis Recti, pelvic floor, and incontinence issues. The program was created by Natalie Hodson, a personal trainer, and Dr. Monique Middlekauff, a specialist in pelvic floor disfunction.

The 30-day program comes with an informative PDF booklet that completely educates you on the reasons behind Diastasis Recti and pelvic floor dysfunction, and is full of workouts and tips to help heal and improve those problem areas. Weekly videos accompany the PDF (which you can print out or read on your phone/laptop/tablet) which provide step-by-step instructions on how to do each move and engage the appropriate muscles.

The most awesome part of the Abs, Core & Pelvic Floor program? It can be done ANYWHERE and ANYTIME thanks to the program being accessible on my phone, tablet, and laptop. I can do it after yoga in the morning, I can do it in my office between answering emails, or I can do it while travelling because there are no weights or accessories necessary.

I’m right in the middle of the program and I can already feel my abdomen and pelvic floor getting stronger. The videos are easy to understand and really help me isolate the right muscles, which is so important to seeing results faster.

I’ve incorporated this program into my daily routine, on my #90DaysToHealth Journey! I love that this program is super informative, relatively simple, and I look forward to doing it each day and getting my workout in. I can feel myself getting stronger, I can feel it in my core and even my lower back, and that strength is helping me gain confidence in my everyday life.

I feel strong as a mother!

Is Carrageenan Safe?

Uyu Soft Serve Ice Cream Gastown

It’s super easy to get confused when it comes to discovering what’s in your food. I’ve been reading a lot about carrageenan, the latest buzz ingredient in the food science world, and I’ve been asking myself, “Is carrageenan safe for me and my family?” and why Food Science Matters!

Are you sitting there unsure of what carrageenan is? Carrageenan is a common ingredient that is extracted from red seaweed and is typically used as a thickener and emulsifier in ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese, soy and almond milks, and other processed foods. You can even make it yourself!

How do you make carrageenan? You boil red seaweed with a little salt, adding a bit of alcohol, and then mixing it in a blender to release the natural carrageenan. The natural carrageenan can then be used in place of gelatin in many dessert recipes.

There are loads of research studies that can be found online about carrageenan, and along with food science facts, I also stumbled upon articles debating whether carrageenan is safe or not. Guess who agrees that carrageenan is safe? Regulatory bodies in Europe, China, Japan, Brazil, and, yes, the United States, have all decided that carrageenan is safe for use in food.

So if all these countries stated that carrageenan is safe in food, where is the controversy?

#foodsciencematters

Early studies that investigated carrageenan safety did not always test adequate amounts of carrageenan, and many studies used the wrong ingredient – that’s right, studies sometimes used poligeenan, which isn’t even used in foods. Many recent articles on carrageenan safety refer back to outdated, bad research!

Current research proves that carrageenan is safe in our food, beauty products, and toothpaste, too! Check out this awesome website on the History of Carrageenan Safety by Food Science Matters to learn even more. It’s important to take the time and carefully review the science of carrageenan.

As a mother and wife, I purchase and make the food my family eats, and it’s super important for me to know what’s in the food I’m serving. It’s important for me to focus on the facts and the food science behind the food we eat. To learn more about carrageenan and other ingredients in our food, head to Food Science Matters, and follow them on Facebook and Twitter.

Are you concerned with the food products you purchase? Have you heard of carrageenan before? How do you try to keep your food safe for your family?

What You Need to Know About Coconut Water

What You Need to Know About Coconut Water

I have always loved the idea of coconut water – it’s super hydrating and full of amazing health benefits – but I slowly came to realize that not all coconut waters are created equally. While some big brands are simply jumping on the coconut water wagon, there are brands that carefully source their coconuts and aim for the purest flavour possible.

Cocozia is an exciting coconut water company that recently reached out to me and I jumped at the chance to try a new brand. In the past, I’ve tried coconut waters that were barely drinkable, but Cocozia is delicious and really quenches your thirst. It has a light flavour with only a touch of naturally-derived sweetness.

What is coconut water?

Coconut water is the juice that is found inside a young and tender coconut. The clear liquid found inside is sweet, sterile, and composed of unique chemicals such as sugars, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, enzymes, amino acids, cytokine, and photo-hormones.

The prime age for a coconut is 5-7 months old for the best tasting coconut water. Each coconut contains about 200 to 1000 ml of water, depending on type and size. Different species of coconut palms yield different tasting coconuts, and different regions show to have variations on taste and flavour as well.

Pure coconut water is best

The best coconut water comes straight from the source – a 6 month old green coconut that’s hanging from a  tree in the Philippines. What’s the next best option? Look for coconut water that’s pure, organic, and with no additives or preservatives. Although raw coconut water has the most nutrients and minerals, unpasteurized coconut water can be dangerous when kept at room temperature or higher.

The coconut water from Cocozia is organic, kosher, and gently pasteurized, which means it is pasteurized at a low temperature for a longer time to retain as much nutrients and enzymes as possible.

Great source of electrolytes = uber hydration

Coconut water is a great source of electrolytes like potassium, making it a healthy alternative to sports drinks which are laden with added sugars, chemicals, and extra calories. Studies recommend using coconut water for rehydration during and after exercise.

Did you know that pre-World War 2, coconut water was used in IV hydration in the US, and in some places they still do in extreme cases? In India, coconut water is used to rehydrate babies that suffer from diarrhea-induced dehydration.

Beauty benefits

Choosing natural, unflavoured coconut water can benefit your skin and hair. Coconut water improves moisture and lipid content in the skin, giving you a glow, as well as boosts oxygen promoting proper breathing of the skin, giving you a healthy and flawless complexion. High levels of antioxidants in coconut water also combats signs of aging like wrinkles, blemishes and fine lines. Applying coconut water onto affected skin areas every night before going to bed may help with acne, age spots, wrinkles, stretch marks, cellulite, and eczema.

Not only is it great for your skin, it also helps strengthen and condition  your hair. Coconut water improves blood circulation in the scalp, strengthening hair follicles and preventing hair loss. Massaging your hair with coconut water, and rinsing your hair with coconut water after washing gives you shiny and silky hair, as well as treating dry and itchy scalp conditions.

Health benefits

Coconut water provides hydration for your body, but also benefits weight loss and boosts your metabolism. It improves insulin secretion and utilization of blood glucose levels, thereby helping to control diabetes. It can reduce vomiting, nausea, acid reflux, and heartburn problems.

High levels of potassium and magnesium in coconut water can help people suffering from blood pressure and cardiac diseases.  Studies show that when you increase potassium through adding fruit and vegetables—including coconut water—you have lower blood pressure, a better quality of life, and reduced medical issues. Yes, you can find potassium in bananas too – but I always get sick from bananas! Coconut water eases my stomach and boosts my potassium – bonus!

Cocozia Packaging

Cocozia is a pure, organic choice

I was lucky enough to try Cocozia, an organic coconut water that lists “Organic Coconut Water” as its’ only ingredient. The owner travelled the world trying to find the best tasting coconuts, and decided to harvest young, green coconuts in the Philippines for the source of Cocozia. It tastes fresh, clean, and smooth.

I really enjoyed the taste of Cocozia, which was surprising because I like very few of the coconut water offerings currently available on the market. Cocozia was easy to drink, delicious and not too sweet, and my children enjoyed it as well. It’s the perfect beverage for rehydration after a long hike or a sweaty bike ride. Do you like coconut water?
