When I received an invite from Health Canada to learn more about nutrition facts labels on our food and how to read them, I was stoked. As someone who tries to pick nutritious foods for our family, I’m constantly checking the nutrition facts tables on food to see which might be better – but it can get confusing quickly!
Is it better to have a ton of fibre? But this cereal has more sugar…. but this one has more sodium… I just end up feeling frustrated at not knowing how to make the right food choices for our household. The Focus on the Facts campaign is meant to better equip Canadians with the know-how to help make healthy food choices easy!
The kids came to Save-On Foods to investigate the nutritional facts and learn more about how to choose healthier food! Do you know how to read a nutritional facts table? It’s not as complicated as you might think! TV host Kristina Matisic and Health Canada presented us with an easy way to learn how to read a Nutrition Facts table. View Post
I know that being “busy” has suddenly become a dirty word of sorts, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I’m often busy and always looking for ways to simplify and ease my life. Groceries that are healthy, local, organic, and get delivered right to my door, even when I’m not there? That’s SPUD for you, and I’m a huge fan of their Vancouver-based grocery delivery service already.
For 2016, SPUD is urging people to join the #LetsNotWaste movement and save time, save money, eat better and waste less. View Post
We all start our new year’s off with the best of intentions… how are your resolutions doing? I resolved to quit drinking and so far, so good! It’s been 23 days and counting… and I was just hoping that any excess weight on my body would just fall off, as weight is known to do.
I’m no longer getting the calories from alcohol, but I’ve quickly substituted it with pizza and birthday cake. I think focusing on one goal per month might make the most sense for me after all… Since the month is coming to an end, I’m going to slowly transition into my next goal – nutritious eating and being active. Summer is officially here and things are about to get hectic! Kids are home from school, day camps are planned, my business is almost ready to open, and I’m really looking forward to heading to Toronto at the end of summer for my sister’s wedding!! With such busy times ahead, I know I have to really find some time to take care of myself and try to stay healthy.
Here are some tips for a positively glowing summer!
1. Drink Lots of Water
Drinking water keeps you hydrated and helps cool you down on those hot, sweaty days. It’s important to refuel your body and keep you energy levels up, up, up!
2. Sun in Moderation
I love the heat of the sun, but too much of it can lead to problems. Remember to wear sunscreen, a fabulous hat and some hipster shades to protect yourself from harmful rays. During peak times, go inside and cool off with some lemonade and gin… View Post
One thing I knew even before this journey is that I’ve never loved to exercise. Isn’t that horrible? But I’ve decided to change that – I’ve decided that I need to change my mindset and embrace the sweat. (Ew.) I preach to my kids about the importance of daily activity and getting outside, but I wasn’t getting it myself. I realized that I need to be more of a role model and actually DO the things I preach and get my kids involved.
How better to challenge myself than to do the Mudderella this year in Whistler, BC, with three of my most fabulous friends? How better to prove the importance of physical activity to my kids than engaging in something so off-the-wall and fun and MESSY like the Mudderella!? Being a role model is important to me – but the Mudderella itself looks INSANELY FUN. Check it out…
I have always loved the idea of coconut water – it’s super hydrating and full of amazing health benefits – but I slowly came to realize that not all coconut waters are created equally. While some big brands are simply jumping on the coconut water wagon, there are brands that carefully source their coconuts and aim for the purest flavour possible.
Cocozia is an exciting coconut water company that recently reached out to me and I jumped at the chance to try a new brand. In the past, I’ve tried coconut waters that were barely drinkable, but Cocozia is delicious and really quenches your thirst. It has a light flavour with only a touch of naturally-derived sweetness.
What is coconut water?
Coconut water is the juice that is found inside a young and tender coconut. The clear liquid found inside is sweet, sterile, and composed of unique chemicals such as sugars, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, enzymes, amino acids, cytokine, and photo-hormones.
The prime age for a coconut is 5-7 months old for the best tasting coconut water. Each coconut contains about 200 to 1000 ml of water, depending on type and size. Different species of coconut palms yield different tasting coconuts, and different regions show to have variations on taste and flavour as well.
Pure coconut water is best
The best coconut water comes straight from the source – a 6 month old green coconut that’s hanging from a tree in the Philippines. What’s the next best option? Look for coconut water that’s pure, organic, and with no additives or preservatives. Although raw coconut water has the most nutrients and minerals, unpasteurized coconut water can be dangerous when kept at room temperature or higher. View Post
