Creating a Cozy Bedroom

Creating a Cozy Bedroom

Do you know what I love? The comfort of a big, comfy bed. It’s like a sanctuary, a place of respite, somewhere you can rest, nap, sleep, dream, and play on your phone…! To create a cozy bedroom, it takes a few key pieces – a fluffy duvet, a nice rug under your toes, big pillows you can prop yourself up with or sleep comfy on, mood lighting with candles and lamps, and some things that you love like books, snow globes, plants, or art!

To create a cozy bedroom the first step is to remove everything. If that seems like a daunting task, remove everything but furniture pieces that have to stay (bed, dresser, etc), and be sure to align those furniture pieces in a way that feels good. Trust me, taking everything out of the room is the best way to do this.

Next, only bring back the things that either have to be there (clothing in the dresser, for instance) or bring you comfort and joy. Oh yes, I’m going konmari on you. But to be honest, you can’t make a master bedroom cozy or comfy if it’s full of clutter and junk. Remove all the junk, and then continue!

When we first moved in, we kept the master bedroom very monotone and minimal – grey on white on grey – and the only warmth came from our reclaimed wood bed. At the time, I wanted a simple and clean bedroom, somewhere that I could close my eyes easily, and rest my mind. It was very minimal and sleek and I loved it, but it does come off a bit cold when I look back at it now. Not too cozy.

When we decided to put the house up on the market, we used a stager to redecorate our home. They were hired to make it feel inviting and appeal to potential buyers. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the following look, however I can agree that it does feel more complete, with more furniture and art pieces. But cozy? Nope.

After a few months, we removed the staging and decided to ‘move back in’ to our home while it was still on the market. We were pretty excited to redecorate our home and take a different approach to our decor – softer, comfier, cozier. That was our mantra.

A touch of bohemian, but a minimal take on it. Bright colours, soft textures, and a lot of hygge.

We still have some work to do to complete the master bedroom, as I would love to add some art to the walls, a large mirror, and even a comfy lounging chair. But here is our work in progress, comfy, cozy master bedroom.

To create a cozy and comfy bedroom – start with the bed. We decided to get a Casper mattress, which was pretty comfy to start with, and then added a down-filled mattress topper, so it feels like we’re sleeping on a cloud! Creating a bed that you love is so important to your health and happiness – seriously, a good night’s sleep is nothing to cheap out on.

Another trick that I use to make our bed extra comfy? Use a larger sized duvet. Our mattress is a queen size, whereas the down-filled duvet is a king size. Using a larger sized duvet than the mattress is essential in creating that cozy look and feel, and it also adds to a perfect sleep when sharing the bed. No more fighting over the blanket in the middle of the night!

The type of duvet you use is just as important as the size of it. There are different weights to duvets, and depending on the climate you live in, you might want to get two different duvets – a lighter-weight summer duvet, and a heavier, warmer winter duvet. We made our bedroom feel extra cozy with our bed linens, which are Belgian linen and textured. Belgian linen is a great choice for bedding, because it gets softer over time, and always has a bit of a lived-in look, which is what you want when you’re looking for a bed you can just jump into.

We kept our walls white, and the two large side-pieces we also kept white. Visually, they blend in, but they are substantially large as well. We sourced them from Ikea, along with the white table lamps. I love white, can you tell?

Going with such a bold colour scheme in here wasn’t too difficult because I absolutely fell in love with the bedding, which we found from Anthropologie, tassels and all! It’s romantic but calming, and the shades of pink are the perfect accent to our white and grey bedroom, and it goes perfect with the reclaimed wood bed. The rug we sourced from West Elm pulls colours from the duvet cover, and also from the room – when we saw it, it was love at first sight!

I decided to add some plant life to our master bedroom, starting with succulents, cactus, and a large aloe vera plant, which I am terrified of killing. I have a black thumb, so I’m taking extra care of it – and I even named it Lola. Because plants that are talked to stay alive, right? And I am singing to this plant named Lola in hopes of keeping it living!

There’s still some work to be done on this cozy master bedroom, and I would love to find some art work or a macrame wall hanging for above the bed, and a comfy lounging chair to read on would be absolutely divine. On the opposite wall there is absolutely nothing, so I am plotting to put together an art wall, with different size frames and prints to add interest. I’m also on the hunt for a mirror to complete this room!

Minimalists Guide to Spring Cleaning

Have you ever had your house up for sale? It’s all about keeping it in pristine condition just in case a showing appears! It can be stressful to keep a house clean all the time, let alone have it smell good, too! With spring finally arriving, it’s time for some spring cleaning – the minimalist way, because I love a nice, clean home, but I’m not about to waste all my time cleaning! Enter the Minimalists Guide to Spring Cleaning!

Our house has been up for sale for a little while, and if you follow me on Instagram, you might know all the drama that’s been happening lately! We received an offer with a quick closing (woot!), only for it to fall through (sad trumpets!) – c’est la vie!

The biggest stress of having a house for sale is keeping up with the cleaning, and making sure it’s in perfect condition for our real estate agent to show at the drop of a hat! That means not running out the door before taking a quick look around to see if there’s laundry piling up, toys out of place, or a messy bathroom. Or if it smells bad.

Did you know that when you use a decor staging company that the furniture kinda smells bad? Yeah. Like storage and plastic. Let’s just say I had to air out my house for a looong time for it to be tolerable, and even then I was a little unimpressed.

I feel like my house has to look pretty much exactly like these pictures, at all times. I know, it’s a lot of pressure. Not only does it have to look this good in real life, but it has to SMELL good and it has to be clean. A dusty house doesn’t show very well, and neither does a home with fingerprints on the wall or garbage smells.

After using the new Pine-Sol in Spring Blossom all over my house (and I actually mean all over), my real estate agent called me up and said “Whatever you used to make your house smell that good, do it every time – everyone loved it!” Pine-Sol is actually a multi-surface cleaner (not just for mopping!), and it cuts through tough stains, grease and grime. It’s a powerful cleaner with a delightful floral scent that I use on everything including kitchen counters, garbage cans, toilets, sinks, tile, walls, wood floors, and even our concrete floors!

To keep your house ‘show-ready’ or just give it a really good spring clean, check out the Free Downloadable Printable below! It goes through the three steps of my cleaning routine!

The Minimalists Guide to Spring Cleaning

  1. Declutter
Remove the excess. Get rid of clothes that don’t fit, anything that’s broken, unnecessary, unusable, or that you just don’t want in your home anymore. Give yourself a clean slate and remove anything that’s cluttering up your life.
  2. Organize
Make a place for everything and put everything in its’ place. Now that you’ve removed the clutter, organize what you own and love. Take care of these things, show everyone in the house that this is the place for that. And keep it there. 😉
  3. Clean
Now it’s time to clean! Everything extra is gone, everything is nicely organized, now it’s time to clean your items, your surfaces, and the windows and floors!

And let me tell you one thing – for FULL DISCLOSURE – my house doesn’t always look as good as in the pictures. I promise you, my desk right now is a disaster and my closet is a mess, but you know what? It all smells like roses so I don’t care.

Minimalists Guide to Spring Cleaning

I get so many compliments on how nice my house smells, and so many questions on what I do to make it smell so good – is it perfume? essential oils? fresh flowers? candles?

And I tell them it’s Pine-Sol. The pink bottle.

Say what? Pine-Sol?

YES! It’s Pine-Sol!

Difficult Decisions

Modern Home

We’ve decided to put our house up for sale.

I really hate even typing that sentence. It was a difficult decision, one that took months and months of back and forth conversation, but in the end we decided it was the best thing we could do for our family. The house that we built from a dream. The house that we put months, even years, of sweat equity into, making it our own. (Check out our home tour here.) And yet…

I really do believe it will be the best thing for our family. Both mine and my husband’s lives have become these unhealthy embodiment of workaholics – and not by choice, but because we see no other way out. It’s work on top of work, it’s struggles and time wasted away from our kids and our home. That’s right, the home that we love so much and have spent so little time at because we’re working.

Modern Living Room

Looking back, I think we would have built a slightly different house. We have no regrets on the house we built, but I think we could have built a house with a smaller footprint and have been just as happy.

People keep asking me where we’re moving, and what our next steps are, and to be honest, we have absolutely no fucking clue. Everything in our lives is dictated by our businesses right now, and that’s something we want to change. So as we try and move on to the next step of our lives, a place where we can be together as a family, have our businesses work for US, and live happily together in a place that suits us, we continue in this holding pattern of keeping a neat and clean house and hoping that it sells easily.

Have you ever had to put up a house for sale? Was it emotional for you? If so, how did you deal with it?

The Perfect Fridge for a Growing Family #TestDriveMoms

Frigidaire Custom-Flex Fridge in a Modern Kitchen

When I was asked to be an Ambassador for Frigidaire I was absolutely thrilled – it couldn’t have come at a better time. My family had quickly outgrown the small European-style fridge that we’d had for less than a year, the bottom freezer proved to be a problem for my toddler who couldn’t reach anything, and with every shopping trip our fridge would be packed to the brim – which led to a lot of food spoilage in the end.

I fell in love with the Frigidaire Custom-Flex Top Freezer Fridge with Smudge-Proof Stainless Steel from the start. The ability to customize the fridge to my family’s needs is great, as well as the fridge’s ability to adapt to change as we grow as well. The brightly-lit fridge with glass shelving allowed us to find things easily, had ample room for all of our food, and tons of room for veggies and fruits.

My kids can easily find and grab their own snacks, like yogurts, baby carrots, juices, or cheese, which teaches them self-reliance and gives them confidence in establishing independence in the home. They try to clean up after themselves, which is absolutely darling – although I need to do a quick wipe-up after! But that’s the great thing about this fridge, if little fingers are all over it, a quick wipe and it looks new again!

This fridge has also helped us in our health goals as a family. Everything is so easy to find and brightly lit! I keep any leftovers in glass jars and boxes, even in the freezer the bright light will help you find that elusive jar of spaghetti sauce that you know you stored a month ago! Vegetables and fruits no longer go to waste since I keep the fridge organized.

This fridge has definitely saved my sanity during mealtimes! If my nine-year old is looking for salad dressing or pickles, she can easily find them without whining. My husband isn’t playing tetris in our fridge anymore, and our toddler can grab himself a snack if he needs to. I would definitely recommend checking out the awesome features found on the Frigidaire Custom-Flex Fridge if you are in the market for a new fridge!

The Secret to an Organized Fridge #TestDriveMoms

Frigidaire Custom Flex Refrigerator #TestDriveMoms

Our family has been using the Frigidaire Gallery® Custom-Flex™ Top Freezer Refrigerator for over a month now and we’re really loving all the amazing features! The fridge works so well for our family because it can change to suit our needs on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis!

How do I keep my Custom-Flex fridge organized?

  • Don’t overload your fridge! I try to meal plan and do food prep once a week so everything I buy gets eaten by my family that week – less waste and more room!
  • Use glass or see-through plastic containers! Food-prep and meal planning goes to waste if you can’t see what you’ve made, keep everything easy to find and accessible.
  • Separate your groceries when you get home! As soon as I get my groceries in the door, I put them away in their proper places.
  • Keep an eye on produce! I try to move ready to eat produce to the front, on a shelf, or even in the door so I know it will get eaten. Don’t hide your veggies!

The truth is, the Frigidaire Custom-Flex fridge is easy to keep organized because it’s customizable to your needs and the shelves slide and move for easy access.

One of my favourite features on this fridge is the Smudge-Proof Stainless Steel! My fridge always looks great despite two kids and a husband going in and out of it all the time – I couldn’t stand stainless steel finishes before because I had better things to do than polish my appliances 24/7! The Frigidaire Galley Custom-Flex Refrigerator eliminates the constant cleaning of errant fingerprints and keeps your kitchen looking beautiful!

I also love  super bright Superior LED Lighting found in the fridge and top freezer sections of the fridge. I’ve never had a fridge with bright lighting for the freezer, and it’s amazing to be able to see everything clearly!

I’ve already showed you guys the awesomeness that is the Custom-Flex Doorcheck out that post here! The fridge door can be completely customized to your needs and everything your family wants can be easily found and accessible!

Another great feature is the Store-More Shelf and Store-More Drawer! The glass shelf can be folded back to allow for taller items to be easily stored in the fridge without having to put them sideways! While the wide and shallow drawer is perfect for grab-and-go items and easy access to snacks.
