Nothing Will Change If I Don’t Change

30-Day Yoga & Smoothie Challenge

Summer is finally here – the skies are blue, the sun is shining, and it is hot out there. I am loving it! I love having our patio doors wide open, the kids are able to play outside all day long, and we can enjoy a meal and a drink outside on the deck. It’s heaven. I should be living in Hawaii or Malibu.

With the lovely weather I’ve been inspired to move more – yes, I get super sweaty and gross. The definition of a hot mess. Who cares? I wish I was inspired to work out more when it was winter, but it’s the sunshine that makes me want to move it and lose it! The weight, that is. Bad pun?

Over the last few years I’ve been seen the pictures and glanced in full length mirrors at clothing stores, and I’ve been watching myself slip away. I don’t recognize myself anymore. When I weigh myself I get stunned. How did I get here? How did I allow this to happen?

30-Day Yoga & Smoothie Challenge

Easy peasy – ignorance is bliss and I’ve avoided the scale for years, I don’t have a full-length mirror, and most of my wardrobe consists of yoga pants (or dressy stretchy pants/skirts) with flowy tops – and I don’t go shopping unless I really, actually need to.

Years ago, I wrote this post about not wanting to wear a bathing suit at the beach, and missing out on having fun with my kids. I no longer care about what I look like, which sounds bizarre but it’s true, I’ve kinda given up. My confidence is high, but my body is not healthy. I don’t feel good. Being active doesn’t come naturally to me, and I hate to struggle, sweat, or look weak or bad.

It’s gotten to a ridiculous point. Like, seriously. I have bags of clothes that just don’t fit. And if I continue down this path of neglect, I’m going to have serious health issues (if I don’t already).

I’ve been working with a life coach these past few months, and although I don’t feel I’ve changed outwardly, my mindset has started to shift and pivot. I’ve realized many things about myself that I’ve just chosen to ignore or live with, and I’m finally beginning to get it.

If you change nothing, nothing will change

Nothing’s going to change unless I work hard at it. Nothing’s going to happen unless I work hard at it. I’m not going to be successful unless I struggle and sweat and work through the fear of weakness and being vulnerable.

So in the spirit of summer and movement and willingness to change, I’ve committed to a challenge for July – not one challenge but TWO challenges… who does that? A 30-day yoga challenge AND a 30-day smoothie challenge, or should it be 31 day since July has 31 days?

Everyday in July I will practice yoga and have a smoothie. Every single day. It doesn’t sound hard, and truthfully, I know it’s not that hard. But it’s something I haven’t done in a long time. I’ve been nurturing myself for too long, it’s time for a bit of tough love and movement and making myself uncomfortable for my health and for my soul.

I’ll be posting about my challenge on the blog, but also on Instagram stories (follow me @margaritawyld) and on Facebook and Twitter.

5 Fabulous Ways to Be Happy Right Now

Music Makes You Happy

Listening to music will improve your mood immediately – throw on a song that you absolutely adore and do one of the following:

  1. Dance to your heart’s desire
  2. Sing at the top of your lungs
  3. Do both!

I sing as loud as I can in the car and I feel great! I dance with my kids when I’m feeling grumpy and restless, and my mood changes immediately! When I’m feeling stuck or not particularly creative, I go to Spotify and choose a playlist that suits my mood and I feel better.

Music can be used as a motivator, and a way to excite you – but it can also be used as a way to level you out and calm you down. Next time you’re feeling a little grumpy, throw on a song that inspires you and I promise you’ll be happier! Find out more about how music can make you happier!

5 Fabulous Ways to Be Happy Right Now

Be Thankful

Being grateful does a profound thing – it takes you outside of yourself and what you’re feeling, and refocuses your thoughts on the world around you. Being thankful for what’s around us and the people in it can immediately provide an uplifting experience.

A quick and easy way to show gratitude? Write a thank you a letter to someone, to anyone, for anything and everything – not matter how insignificant you think that might be! Writing a thank you note is a quick way to gain happiness right now!

Just try it – find a cute notecard or a simple white piece of paper, and write someone a thank you letter. Put it in a pretty envelope and send it off. Know that you’re going to brighten someone’s day just by the simplest of gestures! Read more about how gratitude can make you a happier person!

5 Fabulous Ways to Be Happy Right Now

Meditate to Be Happier

Sometimes meditating can be the way to increase happiness – it’s not always about being loud and crazy and moving your body! You can become happier by sitting still, or laying down, and being present in the moment.

I struggle with meditation at times because I’m a pretty hyper person, but I’ve found a few apps that can help with guided meditations. To meditate, find a quiet space or put on some headphones to listen to a guided meditation or soothing music. Light a candle or diffuse a calming essential oil.

Another trick to trying out meditating? Finding an affirmation and repeating it while doing a yoga pose. I like to do child’s pose, but any pose where you can relax, focus on your breath, and be present in the moment will work! Read more about how meditation can make you happier!

5 Fabulous Ways to Be Happy Right Now

Move It

Moving your body gets your endorphins flowing and can make you happier without you even noticing it! Lately I like going for walks – especially when I feel grumpy or stuck in a funk. Sometimes I throw on my headphones and listen to a podcast or some music, other times I’ll just put on my sneakers and go.

I’m lucky to live close to hiking trails, because getting lost in nature always elevates my mood, but going for a walk in the park or somewhere I’ve never been before can make me instantly happier.

Not in the mood for a walk? Try some yoga, some dancing, or even a focused stretch. A bike ride always puts me in a better mood! What’s your favourite way to move? Try it next time you’re feeling a little low! Read more about why exercise makes you happier!

5 Fabulous Ways to Be Happy Right Now

Socialize to be Happier

Socializing might be the last thing you want to do when you’re feeling grumpy or low, but trust me, it can help you feel happier! Chatting up a stranger at the coffee shop, calling your mom, sister, or a friend, dropping in on a neighbour, or just saying hi to someone passing by can boost your health and happiness.

Calling someone can sometimes do the trick, but face-to-face socializing works best – yes, even if you’re an introvert! The post office lady in my small town is my best friend – we chat so long sometimes, and I absolutely love it. I always feel better after our talks!

How to Practice Yoga at Home

How to Practice Yoga at Home with Youtube Videos

Yoga studios are absolutely wonderful, and I really enjoy taking a class in a beautiful, completely zen space. However, I have found it so much easier doing yoga at home by following some amazing YouTube channels! Online videos have made it super easy to practice yoga at home – it eliminates driving time, it allows me to practice yoga at home on my own schedule, and it lets me choose which class I’d like to take!

As part of my self care pledge, I’m committing myself to move my body for at least 30 minutes each day – sometimes that means a yoga class, and sometimes that means a walk or some jumping on a trampoline. Practicing yoga at home makes my life easier because I work from home, and I live about 20 minutes away from the closest yoga studio! That would be at least 40 minutes out of my day for transportation time, when I can just skip the commute and put on an online video and do yoga at home!

How to Practice Yoga at Home

If you’re a beginner, you’ll want to do some research before starting yoga at home. If you’re not sure about your health or what your body is capable of, always check with your doctor first. Otherwise, try out beginner yoga videos, there are a ton of beginner yoga videos available online, and they are super helpful to ease into a new practice or starting yoga for the first time.

Other than knowing your own body, be sure to have a yoga mat and an open space that can accommodate your mat. Great wifi and a laptop/tv/phone to play videos, and that’s all your really need to practice yoga at home! Here are my favourite YouTube channels for practicing yoga at home!

I really love KinoYoga because of their beginner yoga challenge (I’m a sucker for them!), but I love some of the more technical online yoga videos she offers as well, like going through basic Yoga moves – it’s super helpful to have the correct postures down when you’re practicing yoga at home. There are also intense advanced yoga videos available as well! Visit KinoYoga.

Beauty Detox

beauty detox

I’ve noticed that I really care about what’s in the food I eat, and I tend to stay away from ingredients that aren’t derived from nature or are full of chemicals I can’t pronounce. I read labels to try to find the most nutritious and healthy foods I can – so why don’t I do the same with beauty products?

I’ve decided to give my beauty kit a massive detox – getting rid of items with toxic and cancer-causing ingredients, and changing them out for products made naturally and cruelty-free, with ingredients derived from nature, when possible. I’ve discovered there are so many options out there – why I haven’t I started using them before?

So far, I’ve traded out my face creams, eye creams, body butter, and deodorant for products that are safe to use. I’m starting to research more about the ingredients on the labels, because I’m just as concerned about what goes on my body, as much as the food I ingest. I’ve found three really good sources for finding non-toxic products, my favourite so far:

I’m definitely on the look out for more suggestions! I’m hoping to discover more and more make-up as well.

Do you use non-toxic beauty products?

What are your favourites?

Why Self Care is the Best Care + 99 Ways to Practice Self Care

Self care is the best care

How often do you take some time to relax and take care of yourself? How often do you spark your inner creativity? Self care and creativity are connected, and when you’re a mom or a creative entrepreneur – or BOTH – it can be hard to find the time to take care of oneself. So, how do you practice self-care when you’re a mompreneur or a creative hustler?

I get bursts of creativity, and they don’t often happen in front of a computer screen when I actually need them the most. Nope, my creativity comes out when I’m far from my office, and I’m out in nature or moving my body. A quick 5-minute walk can set my mind in motion, and usually turns into a 20-minute walk – and the funny thing is that before I go for that walk, I tell myself that I don’t have time for it.

How to Practice Self Care - 99 Ways to Practice Self Care for Moms and Entrepreneurs

I actually talk myself out of going for a walk, because TIME. But guess what? That 20-minutes or 30-minutes away from work isn’t going to make me work less or slower – nope! In the end it helps me work better and faster, because I’m more motivated and have that extra spark going!

How many times have you stared at your computer screen today, not knowing what to do next? Checking out social media and wasting time on pinterest? If you work from home, do you get easily distracted by a messy house or a load of laundry begging for your attention? Me too! And it’s totally okay to have breaks, get housework done, or blow off some steam on twitter – but NONE of this is actually practicing self-care.

How to Practice Self Care - 99 Ways to Practice Self Care for Moms and Entrepreneurs

What is Self Care?

Self care is care provided FOR you and BY you. It’s about identifying your own true needs, and taking steps to meet them. It is taking the time to do activities that nurture you. Self care is all about taking proper care of yourself, and treating yourself as good as you treat those around you.

Your needs will be different than my needs, but we all need to take care of ourselves the best way we can. Women spend so much of their time caring for the needs of others, that we almost always put ourselves last. Think about it! Okay, I’ll tell you just two things that often happen in my life:

  • I drive my kids to exercise classes because I know it’s good for them (yoga, trampoline, biking, swimming) but I don’t make time to exercise myself
  • I make delicious healthy lunches and breakfasts for my kids and sometimes my husband while I grab a latte and call it a day

But don’t I NEED exercise and healthy, nutritious foods? Why of course! So why do I make the time for those around me and not myself? Why do I rush, rush, rush, and gloss over my own needs as if they don’t matter? At the end of the day, I need to nourish my own needs just as much as my families and my businesses.

How to Practice Self Care - 99 Ways to Practice Self Care for Moms and Entrepreneurs

Self care is a process, it’s not a one-and-done type of situation. It’s an ongoing, everyday thing. It’s listening to your true heart, your body, and your mind and giving yourself what you actually need. And remind yourself that self care isn’t selfish – it’s necessary. Only when you take care of you are you able to take care of others.

As a mom and business owner, there’s SO many times where I think I would feel better by crossing off my to-do list instead of taking care of myself – guess what? I don’t feel better. I would’ve felt better if I had taken a nap, or practiced yoga, or played with my kids.

There are days that are overly busy, jam-packed with deadlines, and there are days with moments of calm. Take those moments, as many as you can, and take care of yourself.

Does this list seem overwhelming? Start small. Do something each day that will take care of you. Have your tea every morning, take a shower each day, focus on getting at least 7 hours of sleep (or whatever your magical sleep number might be!). See how you’re feeling a week – check in with yourself!
