I love to cook, but I don’t always have time to make recipes with 90 minute prep and cooking times. We eat out more often than I like, but I really try to make the effort to provide my family with nutritious foods – scratch that, actually! To be honest, I make an effort for my kids and make sure they have nutritious meals, and my husband and I are left on the backburner! …Oops.
Why Grown-Up Grilled Cheese?
With our busy schedules, we’re not always home at the same time – or my husband says he’s not hungry, I end up eating what my youngest doesn’t eat, and there goes another missed meal opportunity where we end up digging into a bag of chocolate-covered almonds at eight o’clock at night.
Sooo, I’m trying to change that up and make TIME for cooking, which includes planning meals ahead of time, prepping food when I can, and actually sitting down to eat! Imagine that? My life feels like it’s going through this hilarious circle of crazy right now. I can’t wait for it to slow down!
This grown-up grilled cheese is the perfect balance of a quick, easy-to-make meal with hearty and complex flavours that make it feel like it’s gourmet. Or upscale. Or that you’re not just eating grilled cheese in your kitchen, but you’re actually sitting down to eat a meal with a fresh salad and you’re ADULTING successfully.
But seriously, the combination of Fontina and Gruyere in this grown-up grilled cheese, made with Dempster’s Honey Wheat Bread, is creamy, and dreamy, and sweet and savoury… Add a simple salad to your plate and you have a deliciously, grown-up grilled cheese that easy and quick to make! Plus, this pairs super well with a Sauvignon Blanc or a Lager, too!
This grown-up grilled cheese with a touch of honey is perfect for lunch or dinner, and it’s one of our favourite simple and easy indulgences. I love using Dempster’s Honey Wheat Bread because it’s made with real Canadian Honey and toasts up super nice for this grown-up grilled cheese! It’s a great thickness for grilled cheese – it holds up really well when you grill it!
- Butter (for spreading on bread)
- ½ cup Fontina cheese, shredded
- ½ cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
- 1 tbsp Basil, chopped thin
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 4 slices of Dempster's Honey Wheat Bread
- Preheat grill/griddle or frying pan on medium heat (depending on heat source).
- Butter both sides of bread, and place on top of each other.
- Put half the cheeses on one sandwich, and use half for the other.
- Sprinkle with basil and drizzle with honey.
- Grill your sandwich to perfection and enjoy!
