Last weekend Jay & I took off to the city to have an adventure. Grandma came over to watch the kids, we took the roof off of the Jeep, and drove along the oceanside into Vancouver. We promptly checked into the Opus Hotel, where we were married 3 years ago, checked out the gorgeous room, then jumped onto our complimentary bicycles and took off to the seawall for a ride around False Creek.
The weather was beautiful. It was a perfect Vancouver day.
We rode our bikes down to Vancouver Craft Beer Week‘s last festival day, found a couple who were selling their tickets, and in we went! Jay & I LOVE our beer festivals and this one certainly ticked off all the right boxes. It was outdoors in the glorious sunshine, and with over 80 breweries to sample and delicious food to munch on (sausages AND pretzels!), we spent our whole Saturday afternoon there until they shut it down at 7pm!
My favourite beers weren’t actually beers at all – I’ve discovered a new love for ciders and radlers, both were delicious and refreshing in the hot sun. I think my favourite booth was the Jupiter Hotel booth, straight from Portland. We stayed at that hotel on a visit a few years back, and Jay is constantly trying to coerce me into moving down to Portland – the owner of the hotel was trying to sell me on how amazing and child-friendly Portland is… I swear he paid her to say it all!
Afterwards we rode our bikes back into Yaletown and met up with friends at The New Oxford. We ordered the pork spring rolls and a bit too much alcohol, and shortly after I was riding the bike back to the hotel, alone. Let’s just say that a day of drinking takes its’ toll, and I was not feeling so swell that night.
The next morning I woke up feeling surprisingly good, and we enjoyed an absolutely delicious brunch at La Pentola. I had the Roast Beef Panini and Jay had Eggs Benedict with fingerling potatoes – both were absolutely scrumptious. I highly recommend this restaurant if you’re looking for somewhere special to eat in Vancouver, every bit of our meals were perfection and I can’t wait to come back for dinner.
Spending a weekend without the kids can be amazing. Of course we miss them, they come up in conversation constantly, and we’re both reminding each other to have a dialogue that didn’t involve the kids…! But it rekindles a bit of romance, allows you to flirt without wiping faces, sticky fingers, making sure everyone is eating enough…
This weekend will be quite the opposite of last!
With Father’s Day this Sunday, we’ll be spending almost every minute of this weekend together. I foresee a trip to Whistler, an outdoor brunch, time spent by the campfire and loads of snuggle time. There will be tears and tantrums and tired faces, there will be laughter and joy and sweaty, sticky hands to hold. There will be smiles and yummy food, and dancing – always dancing!
This weekend will be much different than the last, yet I know I’ll love them both just as much!
Are you looking for a boutique hotel in Vancouver? I highly recommend the Opus Hotel. When we’re heading into the city we love to stay there, the service is spectacular, the lobby and rooms are very well designed, and a complimentary glass of sparkling wine upon check-in is just divine! I have not been paid to say this, it really is one of our favourite hotels for a city staycation!
